When you open a website to get any information on the Internet, you must have noticed that WWW is at the beginning of the URL. Not only this but WWW is also connected in front of all the web pages on the internet. So what does this mean? In this post, you will discover what is the World Wide Web and why is it used?
Most people think WWW means the Internet itself. Although they are fully connected to one other yet both of them are quite different systems. Where the Internet is known as a worldwide network linking millions of computers. The World Wide Web (WWW) is a large web of web pages found on the Internet.
So let us tell you more completely about WWW so that you can know what is the World Wide Web?
What is the World Wide Web?
The World Wide Web which we also know as WWW and simply Web. It is an information area available on the Internet. Where papers and other online resources are defined by hypertext linkages connected and available over the Internet by URLs (Uniform resources locator) (Uniform resources locator).
WWW is also called a network of online material, it is completely HTML structured and accessed via HTTP.
In basic words, the "World Wide Web" is a way of transferring information between computers on the Internet. Which ties them together in a large array of always active multimedia materials.
History of the Web
Sir Tim Berners-Lee developed the World Wide Web in 1989. He was a British computer scientist, he was born in London. When Lee became a software engineer after finishing his degree, he discovered that scientists had a lot of difficulties in sharing any knowledge.
In March 1989, Lee shared his perspective on how the web will be formed in a document named "Information management: A suggestion". Which was not quickly accepted by his employer Mike Sendall. But he was greatly affected by these wonderful remarks.
After which Lee was granted time to work on it in 1990. To work on this project, he has been using NeXT Computer developed by Steve Jobs.
By October 1990, Berners Lee had created three key technologies (Html, Url, HTTP) (Html, Url, HTTP). Which is the foundation of today's World Wide Web.
Web Server and Web Browser
Tim Burners-Lee created the world's first web browser (World Wide Web app) and the first web server (httpd) (httpd). Simultaneously, the first web page was served on the Internet in the late 1990s.
A few years later, Tim left SERN where he had been working for several years, and moved to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Here he founded the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which is today an international body devoted to creating open web standards. Even today Tim is the director of this W3C.
Internet Vs World Wide Web
Internet is a large network of computers and knows how many sorts of networks are available. It was started in 1970 by Robert E. Kahn and Vint Cerf. Whereas WWW is very new in contrast. The web was started in 1990 by Tim Berners-Lee. It is a model for sharing data.
The Web uses a way of accessing material over the Internet. It is a collection of web pages following the HTTP protocol, which may be viewed over the internet in any area of the world. A protocol is a sort of language used to transport and communicate data over the Internet.
How does the World Wide Web work?
The web includes several different technologies enabling the user to locate and exchange information over the Internet. These include the web browser, HTML (Hypertext markup language), and HTTP (Hypertext transfer protocol) (Hypertext transfer protocol).
web browser
To view any web page, you have to first use a web browser. A browser is a software that displays text, pictures, animations, and videos on the Internet. Web browsers give an interface to the user to enable your mouse to click on hyperlinked resources. Initially, the web browser was used primarily for web surfing.
Today's latest web browsers allow you to perform several things. Commonly used web browsers are Google Chrome, Opera Mini, Firefox, Mozilla, etc.
URL
Now to visit a web page, the second job is to input the URL (Uniform resources location) in the search box of the browser. Like- https://www.nayaseekhon.com As soon as you input the address. So it translates this address to the IP address of the server and requests to get the relevant page.
Now the computer runs a software application which we name web server. For these web servers, a map is built to bring a certain file from the file system. After locating that file, this server transmits it back to the computer and the machine opens that web page in the browser.
HTTP
HTTP stands for Hypertext Transfer Protocol. It communicates between the client computer and web server by sending an HTTP request and getting an HTTP response. For example, you search for a URL in the browser from which an HTTP request travels to the webserver.
The server gets the request and runs a program to handle it. After this, the web server delivers the output back to the browser as that HTTP response. So in this sense HTTP serves as a communicator.
HTML
HTML, which is termed Hypertext markup language, is used to build the structure of the web page. That's why you must have observed that .html is added at the end of the address of a web page.
This lets the computer know that the request has come from an HTML file. In the beginning, when just a few markup languages were developed, then only HTML was used to construct each web page. But now you will also notice additional file names like .php or .asp.
